Reaching DESY

Basics

The most affordable and efficient option is by far using HVV – Hamburg’s public transportation network.
HVV has a trip planner that can help you go anywhere in Hamburg. Although the planner on the HVV website works perfectly, if you plan on using public transportation often while in Hamburg, we suggest you install the HVV smartphone app. This is because you can always buy tickets on the app, but not in most bus stops (and bus drivers won’t accept cash). If you only plan on using the train, then it’s fine: all train and U-Bahn stations have ticket machines. But do note that, unless you are staying close by (for example the Mercure Hotel Hamburg am Volkspark),, DESY is most easily reachable by a combination of train and bus, so there is a considerable chance you will need the bus anyway.

The key trick, when using the planner or the app, is to always input the exact name of the bus stop that serves DESY, that is, do not input DESY’s general address at Notkestraße, but rather the following:
Bus stop for the main entrance: Zum Hünengrab (DESY)
Bus stop for the side entrance: Luruper Chaussee (DESY)

So which entrance and which train (S-Bahn) and bus lines do I use?

Refer to the map and explanations in the next section: At DESY – Navigating the Venue,
If you are checking in at the conference, you need to get to the CFEL building (which also hosts the coffee breaks, the posters, and 3 session rooms). For that you should use the side entrance. The two main options are:
1. Take S-Banh line S1 (direction Wedel) and exit in Ottensen. Then take bus line 2 (direction Schenefeld, Schenefelder Platz) and exit at Luruper Chausee (DESY).
2. Take S-Bahn line S5 (you can also change to this line from other lines at Hamburg’s Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and exit at Holstenstraße. Then take express bus line X3 (direction Schenefeld, Schenefelder Platz) and exit at Luruper Chausee (DESY).

If you have already checked in and are going straight to the Auditorium, the Canteen, or the rooms in Bldg. 1b, then use the main entrance. Bus line 1 is the best choice for the main entrance. You take S-Bahn line S1 (direction Wedel) and exit at Othmarschen. Then take bus line 1 (direction Sieversstücken) and exit at Zum Hünengrab (DESY).

This option is also the most adequate if you are staying at the Mercure Hotel Hamburg am Volkspark. Be sure to exit not at Zum Hünengrab, but at Trabrennbahn Bahrenfeld. Then it’s a 3-minutes walk to the hotel.

Is there a way to avoid the bus and use only the train?

Yes. The nearest train station to DESY is Othmarschen. From there it’s about a 25-30 minutes walk to DESY’s main entrance.

The StadtRAD (city bike) option

If you like cycling, Hamburg has a very efficient and affordable city bike system, the StadtRAD.
What you need to know:
– you need to download and install their app, and then pay a one-time registration fee of 5 EUR
– the first 30 minutes of any ride are free, on the condition that you return the bike properly to a StadtRAD station. This is easy, as there are many throughout the city. The Othmarschen train station has one, and DESY has two (see venue map below)
– if you ride on for longer than 30 minutes, you will get charged at ~0.15 EUR/minute, for a daily maximum ~10 EUR
