Building up Quantum Universe through computation

Akira Ukawa
University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan

Our understanding of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions at the microscopic scales have reached the point where we can contemplate, entirely through computation, the buildup of quantum universe from quarks and gluons to hadrons to nuclei, and then on to heavy element synthesis via supernovae explosions. We discuss the past, present and future of this field, emphasizing the characteristics of computation and the "co-design" of parallel machines which have played, and will continue to play, a decisive role in the development in this field. The status of the Next-Generations Supercomputer "K" Project in Japan is also discussed.
