Web Scale Music Analysis: a grand challenge in computational musicology

Abstract:

The massively increasing number of live music recordings on the Web provides an opportunity for computational musicologists to perform musical analyses on an unprecedented scale and address research questions which have not been possible before. It also poses a significant computational challenge, with techniques from crowd-sourcing to supercomputing being brought together to address these ambitions. Drawing on the experiences of the international project "Structural Analysis of Large Amounts of Music Information" (SALAMI), this talk will tell the computational, methodological and sociotechnical story of Web Scale musical analysis, consider the outcomes and emerging research agenda, and contemplate the lessons that science may draw from these insights in the music domain.
