Title: The VPH/Physiome Project
Abstract:
Multi-scale models of the heart and other organs are being developed
under the umbrella of the Physiome Project of the International Union of
Physiological Sciences (IUPS) and the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH)
project funded by the European Commission. These computational
physiology models deal with multiple physical processes (coupled tissue
mechanics, electrical activity, fluid flow, etc) and multiple spatial
and temporal scales. They are intended both to help understand
physiological function and to provide a basis for diagnosing and
treating pathologies in a clinical setting. A long term goal of the
project is to use computational modeling to analyze integrative
biological function in terms of underlying structure and molecular
mechanisms. It is also establishing web-accessible physiological
databases dealing with model-related data at the cell, tissue, organ and
organ system levels.

Title: Quantum Entanglement: From Fundamental Questions to Quantum Information and back
Abstract:
The notion of quantum entanglement arose from fundamental
inquires, most notably by Einstein and Schrödinger, into
the foundations of quantum mechanics. Today entanglement
plays a central role in many quantum information tasks.
The resulting experimental progress opened up novel tests
of the foundations of quantum mechanics which not only
sheds new light on issues like nonlocality and realism but
again opens up new avenues in quantum information physics.

Title: Quantum simulation and the universe as a quantum computer
Abstract: Simulating quantum systems is hard: the same weird
and counterintuitive effects that make quantum mechanics hard for humans to understand, also make it hard for classical computers to simulate quantum systems. Quantum computers, by contrast, can simulate quantum systems with ease.
Indeed, quantum computers are so good at simulating quantum
systems that the universe itself is basically indistinguishable from a giant quantum computation. I use the example of quantum mechanics of closed timelike curves to show how quantum computing can throw light on the quantum
mechanics of the universe as a whole.
