About San Francisco

(The following information was adopted from the All About San Francisco and the California for Visitors websites.)

Blessed with a viable fog-cooled and sun-kissed climate and a dramatic landscape, the Bay Area is a visual feast where neither water nor hills are ever too far away. Add to this the cultural medley: within every neighborhood, from Santa Cruz to Oakland to Mill Valley, a diversity of tastes and interest is thriving. You see it in the cuisine, the bookstores, the arts, and the recreational opportunities.

San Francisco hosts over 16 million people every year and San Francisco is the number one US city in Travel & Leisure's 1999 Poll. Many people think of California with sunny skies, warm weather and sandy beaches. Those images are not from San Francisco. Because it is often foggy, temperatures over 80°F are considered a heat wave, and the water is too cold for all but the heartiest souls at the beach. It rains in the winter, but seldom the rest of the year. April and October are two of the nicest months to visit. The average daily low and high temperatures for San Francisco are 48°F (9°C) to 73°F (23°C) from May to October, and 41°F (5°C) to 64°F (18°C) from November to April.

To embrace all San Francisco has to offer you must get out and explore. Walk the streets, drive across the Bay Bridge, go south down the peninsula to Silicon Valley and cruise along the San Mateo coast. The city seems big in most peoples' imaginations because they've heard about so many things in it, but San Francisco is really a small city (49 square miles) and most of the tourist attractions are in a much smaller area than that. One may be surprised in San Francisco when they discover that they can go from Union Square through Chinatown and North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf, all in about a mile and a half! Great sights, museums, art, culture, and family fun attractions abound in the city. When you come to the San Francisco Bay you will find a plethora of attractions and activities to satisfy the desires of every one who visits.

While visiting San Francisco, you'll never go hungry for quality food or shopping. San Francisco offers lots of great restaurants that will please anyone's appetite ranging from Seafood to Steak to Oriental and everything in between. And the shopping is unlimited. There are lots of great places to shop Downtown or by the Bay. You'll find malls, outlets, collector's shops, specialty shops, antique shops, boutiques, high-end shops, low-end shops and the list keeps going.
